Appleby, the former County town of Westmorland, is situated on the River Eden and is home to a well-preserved Norman castle. It is best known for its famous Horse Fair, which occurs every Summer and attracts a large number of gypsy and traveller communities from across the country - and further afield - to trade and race horses. A vacation to Appleby allows you to go golfing, sunbathing, catching fish, or strolling on the beach - the town is near to both the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast Walk - or you can take a journey on the famed Settle to Carlisle railway, which passes through the town and frequently boasts steam trains.
