About the location

BRIDLINGTON

Filey 10 miles; Scarborough 20 miles.

Bridge of Allan is a former spa town at the foot of the Ochil Hills near Stirling. It is named after the Allan Water, which flows through the town and on into the River Forth. With a history dating back to the Iron Age, the village formed in the 16th century when the ford was replaced by a stone bridge and mining of copper, silver and gold took place in the hills above. Surviving involvement in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in the 17th century, and the Jacobite Rebellion in the 18th century, the modern town was planned by Major Alexander Henderson, the local laird, in the mid-19th century with elegant streets and parks. Many beautiful stone villas were built just as the town grew in popularity as a spa town. Today, the main street bears Alexander Henderson’s name and the town is prosperous and home to Stirling University, a golf club and many shops and restaurants. So much of central Scotland is within easy reach of the town, and it has good road and rail links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews. The beautiful scenery of this area makes it a haven for walkers, cyclists, anglers and nature lovers, and golfers are especially well served with Gleneagles a short drive away, along with Carnoustie and St Andrews. The Ochil Hills are on the doorstep, and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park a short drive to the north. The town is host to the renowned Strathallan Games each August when athletes, dancers and pipe bands assemble to compete, making for a fabulous day out.
